The price for the newest edition was just too much for me, given that it mostly received poor reviews. But I actually LOVE this book. I only spent $8.00 and it was the best money I've spent in a while. The information is basic, but very informative and easy to understand. Each category is filled with examples upon examples of films and each chapter includes a special insert on a specific director. I am disappointed that it is all in black and white, but I love all of the information and insight this book has to offer!
I like that it goes into more than just the technical stuff, and talks about the business of movie making as well.
This was our main reference/Textbook for my Film Criticism Class. Very informative and seems to be simple for those who are not too familiar with this subject. It explains the basics of every aspect of film making and the process of filmmaking, except for writing, such as scripts and screenwriting. I like how the book uses diverse examples of films. For instance when talking about Cinematography the book uses Films like Citizen Kane to films like There Will Be Blood. So they do a good job of trying to relate the topic to recent films but acknowledge the importance and influence of older films. I would recommend this for Beginning/Intermediate Film enthusiasts. While reading the chapter about Acting i had some disagreements and found some of the text to be biased. But when making a book about Movies and Meaning Bias usually will be present. Good book overall. Enjoy it
My son used this book for his film class. He enjoyed reading the information about movies. Newer editions are not that different from the 5th edition. Some chapters got change around but same info. Good writing. Paid $12.49 for used in good condition. Amazon.com delivered with description. Book had little wear. Thank you.

I like this book. It is one of the few textbooks that I actually have liked. I like it because it breaks down every element of the filming process. This book has eleven chapters. The topics covered are:the structure of film,cinematography, production design, acting, editing, principles of sound design, narrative film, visual effects, modes of screen reality, business and art, film theory and criticism. I love how the book breaks down and explains each aspect of film. It is not a how to book; it is geared towards giving reader/students a better understanding of the filming process. One of my favorite things about this book is that it pulls examples from modern films. Yes, it uses older films as well, but it also utilizes current films making it easier for us younger students to visualize exactly what the book is talking about.
This book is chalked full of information ranging from the very beginnings of film to today's mega blockbusters. This book is hard to put down, especially for those who appreciate film and cinema. Many of the greatest directors are studied and many of the all time greats are discussed. This book is not only well written, but also has many illustrations. Definitely a book I want to reach for when I'm at the book shelf!
Great book, it helped me a lot for my college work, and the money for renting it was well worth it. Not to mention I scored an A in my class.
