Really great reference to upgrade or modify your transmission. I learned a lot from this book and will be using it more on my next build. Originally got this with another reference book thinking it would help me with the overall start to finish. It doesn't give enough info for someone starting out on rebuilding. So if you are a beginner, like me, this book will not be that useful. Now that I have a bit of experience this book can be of some use to me know. It goes into details about making upgrades and modifications to your transmission. For someone just trying to rebuild their first transmission this will not help.

I bought this book to begin collecting info on my first tranny rebuild for my first restoration. I have never looked inside a tranny before other than changing fluid and a filter so I don't know what parts are what. Maybe it would make more sense if I had a tranny apart in pieces. the book would move up a star if it had a section of diagrams with labeled parts, and an exploded view of the transmission. I would like to understand what happens in a transmission, how all of the pieces function, was an expectation for a book like this. Many steps move along too fast, and I suppose some of that is the medium- a book with stationary pics versus a video; but I expected better after using cliff's book on rebuilding quadrajets which was fantastic.

I purchased this book to assist in rebuilding a GM 4L60E transmission, my very first transmission overhaul job. It has a lot of good color photos of most of the parts and assemblies, and I did find this book helpful on occasions but sometimes it was sorely lacking in important information. It did not have an exploded view diagram of the transmission, did not include torque specifications for any of the many bolts in this transmission, or what the fluid capacity was (this is rather important information to know after you finish the rebuild and have the transmission installed in the car). It also did not give a list of common failures and their causes and cures for this transmission, which would be very helpful in diagnosing why the transmission failed in the first place. There were also several other instances where important steps or information were omitted or overooked. For instance, where the author talks about re-installing the servo assembly into the side of the case, he merely says "The servo assembly should be installed as a unit. Use plenty of Trans-Gel on the outer O-rings." He does not mention that several of the parts of this assembly can be assembled in more than one way, and there is no diagram of which way the 18 different parts of this assembly should be arranged together prior to installing it in the transmission case. On another occasion, the author talks about completely disassembling the valve body for cleaning and inspection, but then includes no diagram of how all the springs, plungers, and valves go back into the valve body, as many of the springs and plungers can be intalled more than one way. It took some searching on Google to save the day when I was trying to reassemble the valve body. There was also no information about testing the several electrical components of this transmission. This books seems as if it were written for those who have built several transmissions before. I ended up having to go to Google on several occasions to find the diagrams I needed and to YouTube to find videos which showed the rebuild in a step-by-step process in order to complete my rebuild, which really obviated the need for this book in the first place... There is a section at the end of the book which covers swapping this late model overdrive transmission into earlier GM cars which could be helpful to the custom car builder or someone modifying or restoring a classic car. I think this book is better suited to people who have built a few transmissions before, or those interested in swapping the 4L60E transmission into earlier GM cars. I would not recommend this book to someone who is rebuilding their first transmission. I think that an actual transmission shop manual, in addition to some time spent watching YouTube videos would be a better resource for someone building their first transmission.

I had never rebuilt a transmission before and thought this book would help. This book will take you through most of the steps in a basic rebuild. There's a lot of good info here and a lot of good pictures but some areas are kind of vague and will leave you scratching your head. Don't rely just on this book. Get a factory service manual and anything else you can find on the subject and read them all. The factory manual is called a unit repair manual, you will need it to fill in the blanks that this book leaves.

The book is not really a builders guide, and most defiantly not a rebuild manual. Nowhere inside it is there solid info about 700R4 and 4L60 parts history or a parts cross reference. There are random tidbits of information scattered throughout the book. Not one exploded diagram, I repeat, not one single exploded diagram. What technical information exists in the book is often general and incomplete. It is more of a 700R4 picture book...

I am not an "automatic" guy as I prefer to shift my transmissions if given the choice. As an old school Pontiac enthusiast, I can't help to see the advantage of upgrading the factory automatics to the more modern transmissions with the overdrive capabilities, and will should I get a car with the older type automatic transmission. Of course there is nothing wrong with the factory stuff and many will keep if restoring their cars or if upgrade cost is a problem, but if you are not going for originality and want to take advantage of a late model overdrive swap to increase performance and drop your engine's cruising RPM's, then this book is for you. This book is a complete manual that gives you all the info you could ever want in making your upgrade selection. It is a step by step guide to identification, disassembly, modification, and reassembly if you can work on a transmission - I can't and prefer to let the experts do it, but I can pull and reinstall it. This book makes me aware of what to look for in transmissions and to which parts & pieces should be checked or replaced with better upgrades. The book also provides a step by step removal and installation of a TH-350 to the more modern overdrive transmission. This swap also applies to the Powerglide and TH-400 optioned factory cars. Great text in simple language and a ton of photos to go with it.
