The book is soooo much better than the movie. The only downside to the book was the lack of pictures but an internet search can take care of that. I loved James writing style and wit. Wonderful read, can't wait for more.
I'm not really into drugs. It's just not my scene. Suffice it to say that when it comes to drugs, James St. James and I have different opinions. In his memoir of his days as a New York City club kid in the late 80s/early 90s, Party Monster, he gleefully recounts his experiences doing LOTS of drugs, with ketamine as a special favorite. But the drugs aren't really the focus of the book. The focus is really on the murder of Angel Melendez, a crime that marked the end of the reign of the Club Kids. It's not a who-dunnit, as the murderers, Michael Alig and Robert Riggs, are identified right at the beginning through Alig's own confession to St. James. We even know how and partially why. What's left is the context.To give us that context, St. James tells his own story. An earlier arrival on the scene than Alig, St. James tells us how he came to occupy a fairly high rung on the social ladder of the nightclubbers, introducing us to the people whose asses he kissed to get there. Just a short while later, Alig arrived and St. James tells us how he at first watched and then became a friend and sort of mentor to Alig as the younger man engineered his own meteoric rise up the hierarchy. And part of what Alig brought with him, along with a new group of hangers-on, was drugs. Well, there were already drugs obviously. But more drugs, and harder ones. The kind that let two strung-out junkies, high on a cocktail of pills and their own sense of importance and untouchability, brutally murder a drug dealer, shove his body in the river, and carry on with their lives like they're going to get away with it. And they very nearly do: despite the fact that Melendez is a missing person and Alig and Riggs' involvement in his disappearance is an open secret in their community, it isn't until the body is found that the police actually take any action.I've never been one to find substance abuse memoirs especially appealing...reading about someone's experiences taking a lot of drugs doesn't really do much for me. But St. James' arch, gossipy writing style makes it about as good as it can be. And while there's no doubt after reading it that he mostly enjoyed the experiences, he doesn't shy away from exposing the less glamorous side of it. Like groups of addicts ripping the radiator out of an apartment wall because they think they remember someone dropping a bag back there, a scene he renders darkly humorous while still exposing as pathetic. Indeed, it's St. James' strong writing that makes this book workable overall. 20somethings drinking and dancing and getting high out of their minds wearing weird costumes is something that seems like it would make a decent essay but would be tiresome at book length, and yet the way St. James tells his story makes it mostly pretty fun to read. This is not great literature, but it's an interesting, well-told account of a very particular time and place.
This book (originally titled "Disco Bloodbath") inspired the movie of the same name based on infamous 90's Club Kids James St. James and Michael Alig. Alig, for those who don't know, was convicted of murdering drug dealer Andre "Angel" Melendez. Primarily a memoir of St. James' struggles with addiction, Part Monster details the rise and fall of Alig and the Club Kids, culminating with Alig's incarceration and the closing of Limelight & the Tunnel. St. James' writing style is unique and hilarious, but it is often difficult to discern the truth from his over the top embellishments of people and events. Nonetheless, St. James knows how to spin a tale and has moments of insight, acknowledging his full-blown drug addiction and conflicted relationship with Alig. I find it curious that St. James never visited Alig while he was in prison but resumed his friendship with him upon his release in 2015. Incidentally, both St. James and Alig continue to throw shade on each other, as only drag queen frenemies do. The one criticism I have is that Angel, the victim, is given little mention in the book, although this is also true in films on the subject.
A well written,east reread book that takes you on a drug fueled journey into the late 80s,early 90s NYC club scene. I found myself feeling the highs, lows, and anxiety that James St. James was describing while on these drug binges. I didn’t like that was called Party Monster,This book was more about James St James and his life,there were sprinklings of Michael Alig and his antics, but it wasn’t like movie which focused on Alig and what led to he and Freeze killing Angel. I think it should kept the title of Disco Bloodbath.
His writing is completely unique and creative, as well as terribly addicting. Fascinating story about how he managed to make his friends murdering someone all about himself. I read recently that Michael alig was released from jail awhile back, and is now homeless and using Grindr to find hookups that will let him stay on their couches. James st. James was on an episode of RuPaul's drag race. Time does weird things.I also recommend Freak Show, also by James St. James
James St. James was part of the fantastic and drug-ridden New York club scene in the 80's, even before the birth of the "Club Kids" phenomenon. Not just gays and drag queens, but truly remarkable parties with bizarre themes. It was a time when everyone knew everyone from the scene, and the drug dealers were known by all. One evening in 1996, riding a drug-induced fugue, James finds himself at Michael Alig's apartment. Over scones and heroin, Michael confesses to James that he's killed the drug dealer named Angel. This is where the story starts.James then fills in the holes, the entire atmosphere of the clubs and the etiquette involved. A "who's who" and "what's what" leading up to the announcement of murder. His tale is told in fabulously over-the-top drama, complete with capitols for punctuation. It's amazing that any one of the "club kids" survived all the drugs, degradations, partying, and out-and-out revelry of their wild clubbing life.'Party Monster' is a fast read: fun, funny, tragic, spinning out of control, filled with bizarre fashion tips ... an expose of an outrageous lifestyle. Never before has a tale of murder been told with such squealing, zealous, zany prose. James St. James brings the scene to life, introducing us to the Michael Alig he knew long before the bizarre murder of the unlikable drug dealer Angel. Get ready for a wild ride when you pick up this book. This is James St. James first novel, I plan on picking up more of his work. This book is definitely work a peek. I plan on renting the movie also. Enjoy!
