About the Author

Painting is as much a part of the Moses family tradition as the family homestead in Eagle Bridge, New York. There Will Moses has painted since he was a little boy, learning firsthand from his grandfather, folk artist Forrest Moses, who learned from his mother, Anna Mary Robertson Moses, better known as Grandma Moses. Developing his own folk style, Will has become an internationally beloved artist in his own right, his art displayed in collections throughout the world, including that of the White House.His first picture book, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a retelling of Washington Irving's famous tale, was published by Philomel in 1995.Will Moses' studio is at the Mount Nebo Gallery and Farm in Eagle Bridge, where he lives with his wife, Sharon, and their three children.Painting is as much a part of the Moses family tradition as the family homestead in Eagle Bridge, New York. Darling book has lots of good pictures and the song notes are included. I bought it for a new grandma who loves Will Moses!

People, even chidren who know the rhyme, are amazed to learn that it is based on a girl who brought her lamb to an American school and is not an old English poem with some veiled jab at Parliament or the story of a crime etc...

Very nice book. Suitable for every young child. A very simple but beautiful story. It is great to begin by singing this well known song "Mary had a little Lamb"

This is absolutely charming book about the true story behind the famous children's nursery rhyme, "Mary Had A Little Lamb." As the history goes, young Mary Elizabeth Sawyer was born in 1803 in Sterling, Massachusetts. Growing up on the farm, she helps nurse a little lamb who was rejected by his Mother for being frail and sickly, to good health. She lives far away from any neighbors, so she and the lamb become fast friends. So much so, that the little lamb even follows her to school! Mary tries to keep the lamb hidden under her desk with a blanket over him. However, when her teacher calls her up to the front of the classroom to recite her lessons, the little lamb comes up to the front, too! All the little schoolchildren laugh about it all and since Mr. John Roulstone happens to be visiting that day, it inspires him to write the poem that later became the famous children's nursery rhyme. The author, Will Moses, has lovely "Grandma Moses" style illustrations to accompany the story. And the nursery rhyme is included in the back of the book, with the music, as well. This is in sum, an absolutely charming piece of Americana. And an inspiring story for both the young and the old alike. I love it.
