One of my weaving teachers, Dianne Totten, recommendation this book as the BEST way to understand how to read drafts, both in terms of understanding drafts as well as eventually creating designs of one's one. Though there is software to help in designing projects, this book helps you understand the fundamentals of weaving structure. It is a fundamental text and is spiral bound. It also develops a deep understanding of profile drafts. I've owned this book for nearly a year, but keep it on my nightstand to partake of it in bitesize learning chunks. I'm slowly working my way through it.
This is the book explaining all the serious technics about weaving. It can be examplified as the good basic cook book you have forever, proven correct, always giving knowledge and when frustrated one can read it and it explain what is wrong with my weaving plan. I have taken several classes from Madelyn over the years. She has thought threw everything she has taught me and I find this book as complete as her classes have been. This book should be in everyone's library. It has been in mine for at least ten years and was pretty 'dog eared'. When trying to find it lately, I discovered someone had taken it when I was teaching and forgot to give it back as sometimes happens with really good books. Alas, I had to buy a new one. While I was at it, my son is a weaver and I bought him a copy.
The title says it all: Complete. I'd already learned how to follow a draft, and even adapt one to my needs, but this book teaches about how the formulas work, how to take a profile draft and from that, create a draft in lace, overshot, crackle, and many other weave structures. No question goes unanswered, and each section also has a short quiz to help solidify what we've learned.
First published in 1993, "The Complete Book of Drafting for Handweavers" has aged well. I was afraid that it pre-dated computer programs for weaving and that I'd need to 'translate' between drafting on paper and on the computer.I'm working my way through this study guide very sequentially because Madelyn suggests that each chapter builds on its predecessors. I'm looking forward to drafting and designing my favorite weave structures and working with ones I've woven but haven't really understood."Drafting for Hasndweavers" is geared for 4 - 8 shaft weaving, although I think I'd feel a little short-changed if I had only a four-shaft loom.
As a new weaver I was finding it very difficult to understand the available information for beginners. I had just about given up when I came across this book and it has answered all my questions and enabled me to forge ahead with confidence. It is a fantastic book. Irene Frost, Sydney, Australia.
