If interested in the ancient civilizations of Peru, you will want to read this book. This book is geared for an archeologist and the book examines the prehistory of the region. If you are looking for a book on the Inca, you might want another book because this book examines the origins and not the more popular Inca history.
I have developed a strong interest in the Inca and their predecessors after planning a trip to the Maya sites of central america. The Maya were remarkable people, but there were other peoples in the hemisphere that also developed in their own sophisticated and and fascinating pathways. That led me to look at the Inca and increasingly the earlier cultures in Peru. The Incan developments were not accidents. They drew on cultures that went back hundreds and thousands of years earlier. Moseley's book is a well researched and illustrated guide to get a fuller understanding of this surprisingly widespread, episodic but ongoing evolution and the array of its rich achievements.
I'm not an archaeologist, and I have yet to travel to Peru. This book is revelatory of the relative scantiness of good archaeological data on pre-Inca cultures up to the date of publication, and of the rather blandly pedantic renderings of such data. Too much historical emphasis on glamorized Machu Picchu and the Spanish conquest, I guess: Peruvian archaeology has been slow to emerge from its own version of the Schliemann-and-Troy phase.

Before visiting Peru, I bought a few books on the history and archaelogy of the land, to prepare me for what I would see. After studying this book, my understanding of pre-Inca and Inca civilizations is still extremely lacunary. This book does not place the archaeological finds in a meaningful historical context. In lieu of history we are given an abstract of Inca legends - interesting but not enough. Surely more is known or can be extracted from the archeaological records! The relations between the various civilizations is skipped over. On the positive side is an attempt to explain some features of the andean civilizations in terms of the echology of the land.

I purchased this book two years ago for a class and because I was a broke student and I had on $15.00 to get home on, I had to sell the book back and as I did so I knew that I would regret having to do so. So, I purchased it again, this time for myself, because the book is crammed full of incredible information about the Incas and their world!
