Fr. Ubald Rugirangoga has been a Catholic priest in the Cyangugu diocese of southeastern Rwanda for thirty-five years. During the 1994 genocide, he lost more than eighty members of his family—including his mother—and more than 45,000 parishioners. During a trip to Lourdes, France, Fr. Ubald heard Jesus tell him to carry his cross: the genocide. In that moment, Fr. Ubald felt a release from the burden of his sorrows and knew he was called to preach healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Fr. Ubald continues to focus his ministry on healing and evangelization. This book is beautifully written and theologically important. It provides instruction on the important of forgiveness, accepting God's mercy, and working towards peace. In each chapter, readers can see how Father Ubald has lived the beatitudes: poor in spirit as a young man learning how to pray; mourning the loss of his father, mother, friends, neighbors, parishioners and brother priests, at the hands of his own countrymen and women; meekness in working for peace and reconciliation; hungering and thirsty for righteousness in the midst of persecution; merciful in forgiving those who persecuted him, his Tutsi brothers and sisters, and Hutus who resisted the genocide; pure of heart in seeking the Kingdom; and peacemaking in spreading the message of forgiveness and mercy in Rwanda and across the globe. In addition to promoting the Catholic faith and our need for the intercession of the Blessed Mother, this is an important work to put names and faces to just a few of the millions of people involved in the Rwandan genocide. If you learn nothing else from this book, learn that as children of God we must live peacefully and with a keen regard for the lives of our brothers and sisters.

Forgiveness. Seems easier said than done. Most of us have someone to forgive, buy try to forgive someone that has killed your mother or father. Father Rugiranoga had to do that. His father was killed when he was a child, and his mother was killed during the Rwandan Genocide in the mid 1990's. In this book, not only does he talk about his story, but he talks about others who he has help to learn to forgive, including some of the people who were doing the killing during that time.This book will put your feelings and emotions in check as you read some of the sad and heartwrenching stories that are provided. This was such an inspiring and amazing book.I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review.

Anyone who has suffered a seemingly unforgivable betrayal of any kind will find peace in the stories of Rwanda and her people. God is giving us the story of this small country and the trauma the people of Rwanda suffered at the hands of their neighbors and friends and even the church, on the other side of the world to teach us how to live in peace and forgiveness if we choose.

I had the opportunity to meet Fr Ubald a few years ago and knew then, he was a special priest. Reading about the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide was very heart wrenching, but the juxtaposition of the stories of forgiveness were all the greater. I especially loved reading about the physical and spiritual healings that occurred with Fr Ubald’s healing ministry. With God, all things are possible!

I can not recommend this book enough. Excellent stories and reflections at the end of each chapter
